About the Nigerian Meteorological Society (NMetS)

Advancing Weather, Water & Climate Science for National Development

The Nigerian Meteorological Society (NMetS) is the national, professional, and umbrella body for experts working in meteorology and its applications—weather, water, and climate. Founded in 1984, the Society unites scientists, researchers, engineers, educators, and institutions dedicated to understanding and applying atmospheric and climate knowledge for the safety and prosperity of Nigeria. Through research, conferences, training, and publications, NMetS strengthens the link between science, policy, and society in addressing environmental and climate challenges.

Our History

The Society was conceived by Professor Jerome Adebayo Omotosho, a visionary meteorologist who served with the then Department of Meteorological Services (1965–1984) before joining the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). In 1984, together with other distinguished scholars and professionals, he established the Nigerian Meteorological Society, serving as its pioneer General Secretary (1984 – 1990).

From its inception, NMetS maintained a close partnership with what later became the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). This collaboration fostered shared programs such as World Meteorological Day, International Ozone Layer Day, and numerous capacity-building workshops. NiMet has continually supported NMetS through annual subventions and joint research initiatives—a relationship that remains strong and symbiotic to this day.

The Society is duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria under registration number CAC/IT/NO 63136, affirming its legal and professional standing.

Our Vision

To be the leading professional body advancing meteorology and climate science for a safe, sustainable, and prosperous Nigeria.

Our Mission

To promote excellence in meteorological research, education, and application through collaboration, innovation, and knowledge sharing among professionals and institutions engaged in weather, water, and climate studies.

Our Objectives

  • Advance the science and application of meteorology in key sectors such as agriculture, health, transportation, engineering, and water resources.
  • Provide a forum for scientists, researchers, and policymakers to exchange ideas that improve societal resilience to weather and climate risks.
  • Support research, innovation, and publication of scientific findings through conferences and journals.
  • Disseminate meteorological knowledge through training, media engagement, and public awareness.
  • Offer expert advisory services to government and institutions on national policy and professional regulation.
  • Encourage youth participation and capacity development in meteorology and related sciences.

Our Founding Fathers

We honour the pioneering scholars who laid the foundation for meteorological professionalism in Nigeria:

  • Prof. Jerome A. Omotosho
  • Prof. J. S. Oguntoyinbo
  • Prof. E. E. Balogun
  • Prof. F. B. A. Giwa (Late)
  • Prof. Oyediran Ojo (Late)
  • Prof. O. J. Olaniran
  • Dr. A. E. Kalu (Late)

These founding fathers, primarily drawn from the then Department of Meteorological Services (now NiMet), established a legacy of collaboration between research and operational meteorology that continues to guide the Society.

Leadership & Governance

NMetS operates under an Executive Council, led by a President and supported by Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer, and Ex-Officio members elected from academia, government, and private sectors. The Society also has a Board of Trustees, ensuring institutional continuity, adherence to its constitution, and strategic alignment with national development priorities. Leadership transitions occur through regular elections, emphasizing transparency, academic excellence, and service.

Collaboration with NiMet

NMetS maintains an enduring partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The partnership strengthens the bridge between research, data, and policy, enhancing national weather forecasting, climate modelling, and public awareness. Together, both bodies champion initiatives that promote climate adaptation, early-warning systems, and environmental education across Nigeria.

Membership Diversity

Our membership spans scientists, engineers, hydrologists, educators, geographers, students, corporate bodies, and climate enthusiasts from every region of Nigeria and abroad. This diversity fuels interdisciplinary collaboration and makes NMetS a vibrant hub of knowledge exchange and innovation.
